Waterford, Ellsworth and the Marshal House Flag: a National Civil War Story Special O’Connor Lecture and Annual Membership Meeting at the Peebles Island Resource Center

Join us Monday, October 22, 7pm at the Peebles Island Resource Center for the O’Connor Lecture and Annual Membership Meeting. Following a brief business meeting there will be a special multimedia presentation entitled “Waterford, Ellsworth and the Marshal House Flag: a National Civil War Story.” The presentation will be given by New York State Flags Project Conservator Sarah Stevens and Independent Historian Paul Schneider.

Colonel Ellsworth, born in Mechanicville, was the first Union officer killed in the Civil War. He was shot after taking down a Confederate flag from the Marshall House in Alexandria, Virginia. In death, he became an instant hero and his story a rallying point for the North. The Confederate flag was recently conserved at the Peebles Island Resource Center and featured on PBS’s History Detectives. Ellsworth also had connections to Waterford and possibly lived here for a few years. This is just the tip of the full story. Join us to learn more!

Ms. Stevens will explain how the Marshall House flag came into the New York State’s Battle Flag collection, the conservation and display of the flag. She will also discuss a new mystery relating to a star, supposedly from the flag, which was donated in 2006 and during the conservation of the flag. Sarah will also show a video, produced for the 1861 Exhibit at the New York State Capitol.

Not only was the flag conserved on Peebles Island, but Waterford has more connections to the story. Paul Schneider will discuss the broad historical overview of the incident in Alexandria resulting in Ellsworth death, some context of the cultural significance of their respective flags to both North and South, the immediate "elevation" of Ellsworth to the status of patriotic martyr, the reaction in Waterford and the participation of Waterford citizens in Ellsworth's funeral procession and burial in Mechanicville, and finally the Waterford role in raising money for and dedicating the monument to Ellsworth.

Lisa Dougherty

Anyone who has an Irish ancestor in their family tree is usually eager to find out just where in Ireland they came from. This can be a very difficult task for researchers, given the limited information typically given in historic documents about Irish ancestors, especially those of the famine era (1840's-1860's). This presentation will focus on sources to use here in the United States to help identify a place of origin for your Irish ancestor, and hopefully help further your research in Ireland.

Lisa Dougherty has been actively pursuing genealogy as a hobby for 17 years. Lisa is a former volunteer at the National Archives, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and currently volunteers at several local libraries offering assistance to people tracing their family stories. She lectures regularly around the area on genealogy topics, and has contributed to various published genealogies and society newsletters. She has been working as a professional researcher for nearly 4 years, is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, and various local genealogy groups.

TUG-O-WAR RULES

TUG-O-WAR COMPETITIONS

This a team contest consisting of either five or eight members to each team and one coach. The coach will encourage the team to pull as and when required dependant on the opposing teams actions. The coach must be very alert to keep his team fully aware of the moves intended or to just hold awaiting the correct time to make a move. The competition will commence with the command from the judge `Pick up the rope`, thereupon the two teams move back until the rope is taught and the judge inserts the marker flag opposite the central marker on the rope. The teams thump their feet into the ground for firm hold and then lean back on the rope and the judge gives the command ` Pull` whereupon the two teams then pull with all their strength. The object is to pull with nearly straight arms and legs from as low a position as possible with all members of the team in unison. The length of the pull may vary but officially should be 12 feet which is measured by two markers on the rope each six feet from the centre. When either mark passes the stick placed in the ground by the judge at the central point of the rope when starting competition, the other side has won that pull.

TUG-O-WAR RULES

Teams to consist of five members and one coach if required No spiked footwear. Raised heels up to a maximum of ¼ inch (7mm) allowed on footwear (to be inspected)
Gloves may be worn
Overall pull to be 12 feet and winner is the team to pull their opposition 6 feet from the starting mark.
No hand over hand pulling allowed. Team members must go back with rope when pulling. Anchorman to loop rope around one shoulder to secure rope. No knot is permitted on the rope end.
All team members to remain on their feet at all times, no hands are persistently allowed on the ground apart from the anchorman who is permitted to use one hand on the ground.
Teams through coaches or captains will be reminded of the rules prior to commencement of competition. Only coaches can consult with the judge and the judge’s decision is final.
A team member is permitted to pull for only one team during a competition. Direction of pull will be decided by toss of coin.
Prior to commencement of pull, judge will ask coaches if they are ready, then give the command `take the strain`, at this point team members may heel in, when teams are balanced, order to `pull`, is given and the tie has commenced.
Teams will leave area of competition during ties in which they are not involved. Two warnings for infringements of the rules or inappropriate behaviour, including foul language, will be given. A further warning will result in disqualification.

Museum Receives NYCH Grant For Phase II of Online Exhibit

The Museum has received a Project Grant from the New York Council for the Humanities. This grant will enable us to continue work on the “Making Waterford Our Home: Online” exhibit website. We are calling this Phase II of the project.

A s part of the grant we have hired Aine Leader-Nagy to continue working on the materials. Phase II will include: matching oral histories (both audio and text clips) with relevant sections via hyperlinks; adding video of neighborhoods and areas discussed in the text of the exhibit; making sections more interactive with feedback options and, organizing a new section designed for use in the classroom, just to name a few.

Making Waterford Our Home: Online” www.waterfordimmigrants.org
Time to Start Exploring!

Explore. Learn. Share. That’s what we hope you’ll do with our new website, “Making Waterford Our Home: Online.” Launched at last March’s Science and Technology lecture series, this website is the culmination of years of research, community engagement, and public presentations. The Making Waterford Our Home exhibit series investigated the histories of the Italian (2009), French-Canadian (2010), and the Irish communities in Waterford through year-long public exhibits at WHMCC. But physical exhibitions are temporary. In fact, WHMCC prides itself on presenting new, original exhibits each season and that means replacing former exhibits with new ones. The question becomes, how can we keep our audience engaged with this project about Waterford’s immigrant history and how can we provide access to the materials we collected over these several years? The answer is digital.

“Making Waterford Our Home: Online” takes the elements and information from those three distinct exhibits out of the WHMCC building and into a digital space. This website will allow us to share the information we collected with people who were not able to come to the original installations and also allow people to “visit” the exhibits again. We are particularly excited that we will be able to use this format to incorporate so many materials we were unable to include in the original exhibits. New images, oral history clips, research materials and resources will continue to enrich this community history project. But this website will also take our exhibits to another level since we will be able to use it to compare the experiences of one group with those of the others within one space. We also hope that this will prove to be a forum for discussion and that we will continue to collect Waterford’s history via this website.

This project is far from over and that’s pretty exciting. It’s exciting that there’s enthusiasm for this type of project. It’s exciting that granting agencies have seen the value in this project and awarded us money to keep improving it as a community resource. It’s exciting that there is still a way to share YOUR family’s Waterford history with us. Because even though the Italian, Franco-Americans, and Irish kicked this project off, we hope to expand it to include other ethnicities in the future.

Intrigued? Start exploring, start learning, and start sharing today! www.waterfordimmigrants.org

Janney Contributes Toward CanalWays and DVC Positions

The Museum is proud to announce that Janney Montgomery Scott, LLC, a full-service financial services firm, has made a contribution of $1,500 toward our CanalWays fourth grade education program and our Docent Volunteer Coordinator (DVC). The donation will help pay the salaries of our CanalWays Project Coordinator and DVC.

“At Janney, we believe strongly in giving back to the communities in which our employees and clients live and work. The Southwoods Investment Group of Janney Montgomery Scott takes a great deal of pride in the commitment we have made to CanalWays and the Waterford Museum,” said Scott Wilson, First Vice President of Janney Montgomery Scott in Albany, NY.

These funds have enabled us to re-hire Aine Leader-Nagy to continue her work as the DVC and serve as CanalWays Project Coordinator. This will help us to maintain our expanded hours on Saturdays and continue to run our successful CanalWays program.

Fire Company Records Become part of Museum Collection

Two incredible sets of records have recently been donated to the Museum. One is a ledger book from the Knickerbocker Steamer Company, which includes company records from 1843-1851. This book was thought to be lost forever and was found in a basement in Northside! It was donated by Timothy Stuto.

The other is a set of company record books from F.B. Peck Hose covering 1892 through 1953! These books were donated by F.B. Peck Hose to the Museum. Thank you to both Timothy Stuto and Peck Hose for enriching our collection and knowledge of Waterford’s past!

More to come in upcoming newsletters about these items. Don’t forget to check out our new exhibit exploring Waterford’s rich firefighting legacies!

Thank You Town of Waterford

Once again the Town of Waterford government has demonstrated its commitment to heritage tourism and the preservation and interpretation of Waterford’s treasured past by appropriating $5,000 to the Museum. These much needed and appreciated funds will help the Museum to pay general operating expenses.

We also would like to thank the Town Highway Department for repairing Museum Lane!
